If we think about a child with a security blanket that he or she carries around dutifully basically everywhere they go, we can use that analogy to describe harbored energy that grown adults carry with them much like the security blanket. For adults when we hold onto certain emotions or energies, even if they are negative, we feel safer with them around as opposed to if we simply let them go. Spirit recognizes that should these emotions or energies be forcefully removed from us, it could cause some traumatic backlash. Therefore, Spirit never forces us to let a situation go. Yet Spirit will always encourage us to outgrow these emotions or energies.
It’s not unusual for adults to remember negative things from many years ago. After all, it molds our viewpoint on those individuals until a sufficient reason has been given to change that viewpoint. In fact, a single negative experience can destroy a positive relationship should that negative experience be harmful enough. Oftentimes, in these situations we tend to forget the good someone does in our lives because of this single negative experience. It’s not unusual for humans to refuse to forgive someone that has done them wrong or cause them harm.
Spirit attempts to guide human beings into forgiving these individuals. Forgiving does not mean forgetting. Forgiving merely means that the individual who has done you wrong will no longer be held accountable to that negative experience. It is like going into a restaurant that you have had many positive experiences in. Yet the last time you ate at that restaurant you ended up getting food poisoning. It is perfectly natural to want to refrain from that restaurant for a short time, but eventually, after we have forgiven that experience, we again go to that same restaurant. Perhaps, even ordering the same meal.
The saying that “repeating the same mistake twice and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity” is not necessarily the case. It is only when we have the same result repeated continuously without fail, and we expect a different result that we need to step aside and ask ourselves if we are making healthy life choices. It would be one thing should that restaurant have numerous complaints about food poisoning, including your own experience, that we should stop and ask ourselves if we are making a healthy decision. Yet a reputation should not be tarnished over a single negative experience.
Spirit will always encourage us to let go of the security blanket because we have outgrown it. Because we possess the ability to forgive those individuals who have caused us harm. That we are more mature than to hold onto those negative emotions or energies. And when we feel that the time is right to let go of those things that bother us, Spirit will be there to catch us.
