Curiosity is the father of courage.

Oftentimes we can be reminded of the next steps we need to take repeatedly. We know that it’s the next step. We can feel our instinctual bones wrap about that next step. It’s obvious to us that it’s the next step. Yet, we hesitate, mostly out of our fears. Our fears question whether that is the next step, and sow the seeds of doubt, no matter how obvious it is to us that it’s the next step that we must take. Not want. Not wish. But must, because the steps we have already taken are quickly disappearing beneath us because those steps have already been mastered.

Yet, a moment of curiosity sparks within us. It can be the tiniest spark of curiosity, and it can sustain us through our fears to take those first initial steps. We can discover quickly that one spark of curiosity can lead us to another spark, until we’ve gotten enough momentum to carry us through. Nothing about this process doesn’t mean that we’re uncaring about the steps we have already taken. After all, to master a step sometimes takes an incredible amount of time. It’s become second nature to us, and life is asking for you to change once again. To develop an understanding about something greater, but different.

It’s like climbing a mountain when you have a fear of heights. You may utilize much more prominent hand holds and foot placement at the very beginning, but as you ascend this large mountain, you find that the hand holds and foot placements become smaller. Even though we can look down and appreciate what we have climbed thus far, we look up and see that much of the challenge is ahead of us. Should we decide to turn back around and descend the mountain, we will never know the thrill of completing our journey. This one small spark could be the spark of curiosity we were hoping for. This one small spark can be sufficient to carry us through the rest of the way.

When the path to us is obvious, and fear has taken over our instincts, then allow that spark of curiosity to become the encouragement we need to bring us the next few steps. Have faith that somewhere within those first few steps the next spark of curiosity will be there to help encourage and guide us. To walk a mile, you need to first start with a single step. A single step turns into feet. Feet turn into yards, and yards can turn into a mile.
